Mahishasuramardini Durga Subduing Buffalo Demon in Panchaloha Bronze – Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu

Durga advances into the composition with one leg planted upon Mahishasura, her body angled forward in a decisive, downward thrust that fixes the moment of subjugation. The raised leg and bent torso create a torque through the centre, from which the arms extend in a controlled spread. This is not radial display but directed action, each limb oriented toward the act of overcoming.

The buffalo head lies at the base while the anthropomorphic form emerges and collapses beneath her, marking the transition between animal force and conscious resistance. Durga’s grip and stance arrest this transformation mid-movement.

The weapons are held close and purposeful: the blade cuts across the field, the trident drives the axis downward, while other implements reinforce enclosure and control rather than excess.

The prabhavali forms a dense circular enclosure, its repeating leaf motifs establishing a rhythmic perimeter that contains the violence within a defined sacred field. Flanking elements and subsidiary figures deepen the narrative, extending the scene without dispersing its focus.

The modelling is tightly resolved across limbs, drapery, and musculature, allowing the complexity to remain legible.
