Reclining Vishnu on Serpent Couch with Lakshmi in Bronze – Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu

Vishnu reclines in the Padmanabha (Padma or lotus emerging from his navel/nabhi) form upon the coiled body of Adishesha, his elongated figure following the gentle horizontal sweep of the serpent couch.

The raised hood of the serpent arches protectively above, creating a curved canopy that frames the head and anchors the composition. From Vishnu’s navel rises a slender lotus stem, upon which Brahma is seated, marking the act of creation emerging from a state of cosmic repose.

Lakshmi sits near his feet, her posture composed and attentive, completing the narrative axis that moves from rest to creation to service. The arrangement guides the eye across the reclining form, from the calm, inward-turned face through the extended torso to the delicately modelled attendants.

The sculpture is cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, allowing for continuous, fluid modelling across the length of the figure. Fine detailing in the ornaments, serpent scales, and textile patterns is balanced by a unified surface patina that settles into the recesses, enhancing depth without disrupting clarity.
