Grand Shiva Parvati Mandapam | Embossed Tanjore Painting

Shiva and Parvati are enshrined at the centre of this mandapam-style Tanjore composition as Pradosha Murti, seated in composed union beneath a domed canopy. Shiva’s presence is steady and frontal, while Parvati mirrors this calm, together forming a balanced axis of stillness and grace. In the foreground, a Shiva linga receives worship, anchoring the scene within active ritual practice rather than narrative depiction.

The sanctum unfolds architecturally. Painted doors carry Shaiva guardians and attendants, their vertical placement framing entry into the inner field. Above, kirtimukha and scrolling floral vines extend across the crest, while the gilded surface, built through layered gesso and gold work, catches light in controlled relief.

The carved wooden base introduces sculptural depth, with Bhairava, Kalyanasundara, Dakshinamurti, and Sadashiva rendered in sequence, grounding the composition in multiple Shaiva manifestations.

With its framed enclosure, layered iconography, and ritual focus, the work moves beyond painting into a contained shrine, holding the presence of Shiva within a defined sacred space.
