Seated together as Shiva and Parvati, this Tanjore painting presents the paired principles of Purusha and Prakriti, whose union underpins creation, continuity, and dissolution. Shiva holds Parvati in lalitasana, a posture of ease that stabilises the composition, while Parvati, identified here with Meenakshi, sits with a lotus, marking auspiciousness and offering.
They are placed within a deep, gold-worked mandapam, supported by pillars and enclosed by an ornate arch crowned with a kirtimukha. The throne rests upon Nandi, shown in a turning motion that introduces movement into an otherwise frontal arrangement. Flanking registers include Ganesha and Kartikeya above, with attendants such as Bhringi and Nandikeshwara below.
Ritual elements, including a Shiva Lingam, fruit offerings, and royal insignia reinforce temple context. Gold is applied in layered relief across crowns, jewellery, and architectural surfaces, producing a structured, luminous surface held within the teakwood frame.
