Wooden Vishnu–Krishna Lila Narrative Panel

A layered narrative unfolds across this richly carved wood panel, where tenderness, play, and cosmic authority are held within a single architectural field. At the upper register, Kama and Rati ride their vahana, introducing a note of sweetness that permeates the composition, setting the tone for the visual journey below.

This gentle register transitions into scenes of Krishna and Vishnu. Krishna appears with cows, evoking pastoral intimacy, while Vishnu is shown seated in union with Lakshmi, the two figures composed in balanced stillness.

At the centre, a four-armed standing Vishnu anchors the panel, establishing a vertical axis of stability. Beside him, Vishnu and Lakshmi appear enthroned upon Shesha, while the dynamic episode of Kaliya subjugation introduces movement and controlled energy into the sequence.

Between these principal forms, pillars articulate the space into shrine-like compartments. Within them stand devotees, their presence reinforcing the act of viewing as participation. Flanking guardians, identified as Jaya and Vijaya, mark thresholds and frame the sacred imagery.

The surrounding surface is dense with floral scrolls, mouldings, and rhythmic borders drawn from South Indian temple architecture.
