Standing Bhikshatana Shiva with Serpent and Skull in Bronze – Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu

Bhikshatana Shiva appears as the wandering ascetic, his form held in a graceful yet unsettled stance that balances stillness with movement. One leg is firmly grounded while the other lifts lightly, creating a subtle shift in axis that defines the composition. The body is slender and unadorned in essence, yet marked by finely worked ornaments and rudraksha strands, with the yajnopavita crossing the torso in a controlled line.

The face is composed, framed by bow-like brows and a clearly defined third eye, with lips held in a restrained, inward expression. A skull rests within the matted locks, marking his dominion over time, while a serpent encircles the waist, its coiled form integrated into the rhythm of the figure. The damaru and trishula articulate creation and dissolution through their distinct forms.

At his side, a gana stands in attendance, while a dog rises toward the offering held in Shiva’s hand, introducing a grounded, earthly counterpoint. Cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, the surface carries fine detailing with a cohesive finish. The sculpture holds a charged stillness, where opposing forces remain contained within a single, unified presence.
