Ten-Armed Shiva Dancing on Nandi in Panchaloha Bronze – Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu

Dashabhuja Rishabha Tandavamoorthy presents Shiva in a charged dancing posture upon Rishabha, the lifted body held in a controlled arc that balances motion with command. Ten arms extend outward in a coordinated spread, each bearing attributes that articulate action, protection, and transformation. The form is dynamic yet centred, with the face composed and the gaze steady, establishing the figure as both mover and axis of the composition.

Around him unfolds an extensive divine assembly. Vishnu, Bhairava, Veerabhadra, Ganesha, Murugan, Narada, Bhringi, and attendant beings occupy the surrounding field, structuring the space as a rhythmic, circular presence rather than a dispersed grouping.

Parvati appears as Meenakshi, poised with her parrot, completing the central pairing within this expanded field. The flaming prabhavali gathers these elements into a unified enclosure, intensifying the sense of contained energy.

The iconography reflects a synthesis of regional traditions, where a Pala-derived visual language is retained within a Chola context. The bronze surface carries fine, continuous modelling, allowing the complexity of the composition to remain legible and resolved within a single, cohesive form.
