Large Shiva as Dakshinamurti in Wood

Shiva is seated in lalitasana, the body held in effortless ease, one leg folded while the other rests upon the subdued Apasmarapurusha below. The posture becomes the defining presence, composed yet alert, where stillness carries authority. The gaze is calm and inward, suggesting not withdrawal but a state of complete awareness.

This is Dakshinamurti, Shiva as the supreme teacher, where knowledge is not spoken but embodied. The lower right hand forms the vyakhyana mudra, a gesture of exposition, while the scripture in the opposite hand affirms his role as the source of all learning.

The upper hands extend this identity, holding the drum and lotus, bringing together rhythm and refinement, knowledge and aesthetic sensibility within a single form.

At the base, Nandi rests in quiet devotion, while surrounding disciples anchor the composition in a space of transmission and practice. The presence of Apasmarapurusha beneath his foot signifies the overcoming of ignorance through awareness.

Carved in Vengai wood, the surface holds a deep, warm tonality. The grain subtly animates the form, softening edges and gathering shadow, allowing the sculpture to settle into an interior as a focal point of quiet concentration and enduring presence.
