Rising to an architectural scale, the panel of this masterwork, Tanjore, opens like a shrine, with doors that extend the image outward and draw the viewer inward, creating the sense of standing before an active sanctum rather than a contained surface.
At its centre, Shiva appears as Pradosha Murti, seated with Parvati upon Nandi. The bull’s lifted foreleg and slight turn introduce a note of movement, preventing the composition from settling into stillness.
The divine pair is set within a kirtimukha arch, which is itself held inside a larger structural frame supported by yali pillars. Layers of raised ornament and gold articulation build depth across the surface, allowing the central figure to emerge gradually as the eye adjusts.
The inner doors carry a grid of small, carefully rendered figures representing the 63 Nayanmars, each accompanied by identifying inscriptions. These panels function as more than decoration; they create a passage of devotion, where the many lives of saints lead toward the central presence of Shiva.
Flanking the composition, figures such as Shukadeva, Tumburu, Ganesha, and Vyaghrapada appear on one side, with Bhringi, Kartikeya, Patanjali, and Narada on the other, forming a gathered assembly around the main image. Above, a row of suspended glass elements introduces a festive, luminous detail, echoing temple interiors.
Encountered in space, the work alters distance itself; the viewer is not positioned outside it, but drawn into its threshold, where image and presence begin to converge.
