This Rama Pattabhishekam is conceived as a shrine brought into view, where the coronation of Rama and Sita unfolds within an architectural frame that echoes a temple interior.
The gold is built up in relief, lifting the ornaments, throne, and arch so they catch light across the surface. Set against deep red and green, the detailing remains clear, allowing each element to register without crowding the whole.
Garuda (Vishnu’s mount) and Hanuman (the devotee of Sri Rama) stand on either side in devotion, while the outer doorway is marked by Jaya and Vijaya (the guardians of Vaikuntha, Vishnu’s celestial realm), mirroring these figures’ presence in ancient Hindu temples.
Above, the Vaishnava tilak, along with the chakra (discus) and shankha (conch), firmly situate the work within its devotional tradition.
The shrine-like structure adds depth and a sense of scale, drawing the viewer inward. With Rama at its centre, the composition does not remain distant: it invites participation, placing the viewer within the moment of coronation, as these temple-style Tanjore works were once meant to do.
