Tanjore Painting of Krishna and Radha with Musical Attendants and Vaishnava Symbols

Over five feet in height, this shrine-format Tanjore painting opens through wooden doors to reveal Krishna with Radha at its centre, shifting the work from a framed image into a contained devotional space. The scale establishes distance, but the pairing draws the viewer inward.

Krishna stands in a gentle, crossing stance, the flute held at rest, while Radha leans into him, her arm placed across his shoulder. A parrot perches beside her, adding a note of intimacy to the composition. Their expressions are composed and attentive, with the interaction between them becoming the focal point.

The surface is worked with exceptional control. Gold is not applied broadly but articulated through fine, repetitive patterning across garments and jewellery, creating a dense, tactile field that holds light closely.

Ornaments, necklaces, waistbands, and anklets are arranged with clarity, each element placed to reinforce the symmetry of the figures. The red ground intensifies this arrangement, carrying associations of passion, energy, and devotion while stabilising the composition.

The arched frame introduces an internal architecture, with yali forms emerging at the corners and pillars defining the inner space. On the inner doors, female attendants play the veena and violin, an unusual pairing that reflects a moment of artistic exchange with European tradition, within the Tanjore tradition. The outer doors present standing goddesses as guardians, while the lower panels carry the conch and discus, marking the Vaishnava presence.

As the doors open, the work reveals itself in layers, structure, narrative, and surface, centred on the quiet, held exchange between Krishna and Radha.
