Four-Armed Vishnu with Dashavatara Aureole in Patinated Bronze – Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu

Vishnu stands in a frontal samabhanga, his vertical axis aligned with the rising prabhavali that encloses and stabilises the form. One hand is held in abhaya mudra, offering assurance, while another bears the chakra, its precise geometry marking order and continuity. The remaining hands extend with measured balance, sustaining the composure of the figure.

The prabhavali unfolds into a dense sculptural field, its curling foliage interspersed with miniature forms of the Dashavatara, each placed within the rhythmic framework of the aureole. Among these, Garuda and Hanuman appear within the vegetal scrolls, their presence integrated into the structure rather than set apart, extending the Vaishnava context outward from the central deity.

Cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, the sculpture carries a layered green patina that settles into recesses and edges, accentuating depth and contour. The surface softens the intricacy without losing clarity, allowing the figure to emerge with quiet authority. The composition holds a contained yet expansive stillness, drawing the eye inward and holding it there.
