Lilas of Lord Vishnu Wood Panel - The Many Lilas Held in Architectural Order

A structured grid of arched niches unfolds as a complete visual vision of Vishnu’s cosmic play, each compartment holding a distinct episode while remaining part of a unified whole.

In the upper register, Vishnu appears mounted on Garuda, establishing divine authority, alongside scenes such as the disrobing episode and Gajendra Moksha, where protection and intervention define his role.

The central band stabilises the composition through iconic forms. Trivikrama rises in measured expansion, while Vishnu seated with Sridevi and Bhudevi anchors the axis of preservation. Krishna appears with the peacock, introducing grace and relational presence within the sequence.

Below, the narrative becomes more intimate and pastoral. Krishna with the butter pot suggests playful abundance, the four-armed flute-playing Krishna with the cow introduces harmony between nature and divinity, and Kaliya Mardana captures controlled force through movement and dominance over chaos.

Flanking the composition, yali forms, birds, and vegetal scrolls create a continuous ornamental field, reinforcing protection, fertility, and cyclical renewal. The carving is deep and precise, with layered colour enhancing depth, allowing the panel to function as a complete visual cosmos within an interior space.
