Temple-Style Dashavatara Wood Panel - Lord Vishnu’s Ten Manifestations

The ten incarnations stand in a measured row, each held within a slender pillared niche that gives the panel its steady architectural rhythm. Matsya and Kurma begin the sequence with grounded, elemental forms, followed by Varaha and Narasimha, whose animal features introduce a controlled intensity.

Vamana appears compact and self-contained, contrasted by Parashurama’s assertive stance with axe in hand. Rama stands poised with bow, while Balarama’s form carries weight and balance. Krishna introduces a gentle shift in movement, and Hayagriva concludes the sequence with a distinct, horse-headed clarity.

The repetition of columns and arches creates continuity, allowing each figure to remain distinct without breaking the flow. The upper and lower borders reinforce this order, enclosing the avatars within a defined visual field.

The wood is deeply carved and enriched with colour, where reds, greens, and muted gold tones settle into the contours of the figures. Raised surfaces catch light, while recessed areas retain shadow, giving the panel depth and texture without losing clarity of form.
