Wooden Panel of Musical Ganesha with Bhairava, Shiva Linga and Forms of Shiva

A disciplined grid of arched niches unfolds as a complete Shaiva assembly, each compartment holding a distinct form within a unified architectural frame. At the centre, the Shiva Linga anchors the composition, establishing the core of formless presence.

Around it, Shiva appears in multiple aspects, as Dakshinamurti seated in composed instruction, as Pashupatinath associated with the animal world, and in attendant forms accompanied by ganas that animate the surrounding space.

The upper register introduces musical Ganesha figures, each seated and engaged with instruments, bringing a rhythmic, almost auditory dimension to the panel. Their repetition creates continuity, while subtle variations in gesture maintain visual interest. Bhairava appears with a more assertive stance, adding a contrasting intensity within the otherwise composed field.

The borders are richly articulated with curling peacocks, their tails forming circular patterns that echo cycles and continuity. Below, large lotus forms ground the composition, their layered petals providing a stable base. Pillared mandapam structures organise each figure, transforming the panel into a miniature architectural elevation.

Carved in monochrome wood, the emphasis remains on depth, contour, and surface rhythm. Light traces the raised forms and settles into recesses, allowing the entire panel to function as a self-contained sacred structure within an interior space.
