A devotional piece is not just what you bring home — it is where you place it. Across centuries, Indian families have followed Vastu Shastra, the ancient science of harmonized space, to position deities so their blessings flow freely. Get the direction right, and a single Lakshmi bronze can transform the financial energy of your entire household. Get it wrong, and even the most exquisite Tanjore loses its full power.

This is the practical Vastu guide our concierge team at Bronze N Beyond shares with every customer who installs a deity at home.

The five Vastu principles every collector should know

  1. North-East is sacred (Ishanya Kona) — the corner of Ishvara (Lord Shiva). The puja room belongs here. All deities face West or East from this corner.
  2. Deities face you, you face them — never the back of a deity to the room.
  3. Raise the idol above floor level — minimum waist height for standing worship, chest height for seated.
  4. Two deities of the same name do not share one shrine — avoid two Ganeshas, two Lakshmis facing each other.
  5. The room must be quiet, well-ventilated, and uncluttered — Vastu energy stagnates in dust.

Where to place each deity — a direction-by-direction guide

Lord Ganesha — north-east, north, or above main entrance

Ganesha is the obstacle-remover. He is best placed: - North-east corner of puja room facing east — bestows clarity and removes blockages. - Above the main door (lintel) facing outward — stops obstacles before they enter. - Choose a left-trunked Ganesha for daily family use.

Recommended: Ganesha and Ashtalakshmi Mandala Tanjore.

Goddess Lakshmi — north or north-east, facing east

  • North wall facing east — the direction of Kubera (god of wealth). Strongest financial energy.
  • Never on the south wall — south is Yama’s direction; weakens wealth flow.
  • Place Lakshmi with Vishnu (Lakshmi-Narayana) for marital harmony plus prosperity.

Recommended: Four-Armed Lakshmi in Lalitasana on Lotus in Bronze.

Lord Vishnu — north-east or east, facing east or west

  • Vishnu is a sustainer; he stabilizes prosperity already invited by Lakshmi.
  • Best paired with Lakshmi on the same shrine.
  • Standing or seated Vishnu both work; Garuda-mounted Vishnu especially powerful for entrance-facing placement.

Recommended: Four-Armed Vishnu On Garuda in Panchaloha Bronze.

Lord Shiva (Nataraja) — north or north-east

  • A Nataraja bronze in the north-east is a meditation focus rather than a daily worship icon.
  • Avoid placing Nataraja in bedrooms; the dynamic energy disturbs sleep.
  • Drawing room or meditation room north-east is ideal.

Recommended: Shiva — Nataraja in Panchaloha Bronze with Aureole.

Lord Krishna — east wall, north-east, or bedroom (married couples)

  • Bala / Navaneeta Krishna — east wall for family abundance.
  • Rukmini Kalyanam — bedroom of married couples for harmony.
  • Venugopala Krishna — music or meditation room.

Recommended: Navaneeta Krishna Tanjore.

Goddess Durga / Saraswati / Devi — north or east

  • Saraswati — west wall of a study room for students.
  • Durga — north for protection; never in bedrooms.

Tirupati Balaji (Venkateshwara) — north-east, facing east

  • The most powerful protective and wealth-bestowing form.
  • Pair with Lakshmi for the full Lakshmi-Narayana energy.

Recommended: Tirupati Balaji with Lakshmi on Lotus | 22K Gold Tanjore.

Stone sculptures (Mahabalipuram Yali, elephants, dwarapalakas) — entrance, garden, or living area

  • Yali pairs — flank the main door for protection.
  • Elephants — pairs at the entrance, trunks raised for prosperity.
  • Stone deities (Dakshinamurthy, Buddha) — meditation room north-east.

Recommended: Mahabalipuram Stone Yali Pair.

Common Vastu mistakes to avoid

Deities in the bedroom on the bed-facing wall — disturbs sleep and Vastu of the marriage.

Two deities facing each other on the same shelf — creates competing energies.

Photos of deceased family members in the puja room — separate them into a memorial corner outside the puja room.

Broken, chipped, or cracked idols — immerse respectfully (visarjan) and replace.

Puja room above a bathroom or staircase — destabilizes energy. Relocate the shrine.

Direct sunlight on a Tanjore painting all day — UV damages mineral pigments.
