This Tanjore presents a rare aspect of Hanuman as Yoga Anjaneya (son of Anjani), a form he assumes in relation to Narasimha, the man-lion aspect of Vishnu at Sholingur near Chennai. Here, Hanuman is a stabilising force: holding balance against the intensity of Narasimha’s cosmic energy, contributing to preservation through restraint rather than action.
He is shown seated cross-legged, secured with a yoga-patta: a strap that binds the posture into stillness. The looped rise of the multi-hooded Shesha behind him echoes this form, creating a continuous, symmetrical circuit between the coiled serpent and the folded body. Together, they suggest contained movement: energy held inward, directed, and sustained.
The four-armed form marks an expanded presence: the upper hands hold the shankha (conch) and chakra (discus), attributes of Vishnu, indicating a state of complete alignment. The lower hands are set in a teaching gesture (vitarka mudra), reflecting Hanuman as a knower who guides to supreme wisdom.
Raised gold work defines the crown, ornaments, and arch, with kirtimukha motifs appearing along the yoga-patta and armlets, alongside makara elements within the ornament. The red ground is balanced with green accents, while the sun and moon above complete the composition as markers of day and night and the cycle of time.
Set within an antique wooden frame, the painting is bordered by carved pillars and crowned with a Dravida-style mandapam, inspired by South Indian temple architecture. This architectural surround brings the powerful and rare icon of Sholingur Yoga Anjanyea into the space it inhabits.
