Carved in dense Mahabalipuram granite, this pair of yali brackets rises in a dynamic, rearing posture, each creature arching backward in a powerful, tensile curve that defines the composition.

 

The leonine body, with its flared mane and elongated snout, embodies the composite yali form, protective, vigilant, and intrinsically tied to Dravidian temple architecture. Each figure braces against a cubical pillar, transforming sculptural form into structural suggestion.

 

The granite’s weight and density are evident in the deep-cut detailing of the mane, anklets, and curling tail, all achieved through deliberate, subtractive carving. The surface remains largely matte, allowing light to settle into recesses and accentuate the muscular volume and carved ornament.
